Homelessness in Whatcom County

Homelessness in Whatcom County Online

What does “home” mean to someone who is living without a physical home? We often make assumptions about people based on where or how they live. At this Read & Share event,  the Whatcom Homeless Service Center joins us to share how their programs coordinate homeless housing, build trust and create relationships, and increase housing retention.

READ AND SHARE: OUR COUNTYWIDE BOOK CLUB

We chose our third annual Read & Share selection in the midst of working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our personal spaces were top-of-mind, and Erica Bauermeister’s beautiful memoir, House LessonsRenovating a Life, captured aspects of that moment. Simply put: It is the story of her family’s hopeful renovation of a forlorn historic house in Port Townsend. It is also a moving exploration of how spaces affect us and the value of building something to last.

House Lessons encourages us to consider what we care most about in life and, then, to do the work – even when it is hard. After the events of 2020, “we’re all going through a psychological reevaluation,” Bauermeister says. “The issues are larger than a single home renovation. We are taking stock of who we are, and who we want to be.”

Check out House Lessons from the library. Then, join us for Read & Share programs that explore the questions of how we build community. Click below to register for this event. See the full list of events here: wcls.org/readandshare
