November Author Showcase Featuring Erika Shepard: Being Transgender - A Candid Conversation In-Person

Join us at the South Whatcom Library for a series of events featuring local authors discussing topics connected to their work as writers — identity, connection to language and books, the writing process, and excerpts from their writing. Each event will be unique and offer the opportunity to join the conversation. The series begins with local author Erika Shepard on Wednesday, November 6 from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

BEING TRANSGENDER - A CANDID CONVERSATION

Transgenderism: It’s in the news and the subject of endless comments, debates and memes on social media, but what is it?
Is it a natural human variation, a delusion or worse — a perversion? How does any person know they are trans?

Author Erika Shepard will address these questions to help bring understanding to the changing social landscape around transgenderism. Following her short presentation, she will open the floor to questions which will act as jumping-off points for a frank and open discussion. Your questions are strongly encouraged.

Erika Shepard is a retired geologist, transgender woman and the author of two books. Her memoir, Trans-Formations – From Field Boots to Sensible Heels was awarded first place in the Journeys category at the 2024 Chanticleer Book Reviews conference. Her second book is a work of fiction titled Abomination Child. It has received a five-star review and has been submitted for the 2025 awards at Chanticleer. Shepard is currently working on a historical fiction novel that follows two widowed women in 1870s Kansas as they struggle to survive in a hostile patriarchal culture.
